About Us
We are a church of approximately 250 people with lively worship and an active youth programme. Our aim is to reach the people of St Albans and the surrounding areas in a non-religious and relevant way, and to equip others to do the same. Our vision does not stop there; we are also reaching out to many nations in the continents of Asia, Europe, and Africa.

We experienced a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit in what the media has called the Toronto Blessing (actually it is the Fathers Blessing) after the then current pastors David Campbell & Grahame Wells visited Toronto during the start of what God was doing there and brought it back to St Albans. David was key in bringing Elim into this renewal and Elim was the first mainline denomination to publicly endorse the Fathers Blessing as a genuine move of God. John and Carol Arnott have become good friends of David & Mandy Campbell, and John Arnott was the main speaker at our opening event in the new building in October 2003.
Our annual conference in the Alban Arena, Rivers of Revival, is a time when we come together with other local churches to invite well known speakers from around the world to minister to us and motivate us to reach out to the world around us.

City Church St Albans is an Elim Pentecostal Church.

Senior Pastor:
Phil Johnston

Phil's Testimony

In 1978 Pastor Phil Johnston was serving with Tyne & Wear Metropolitan Fire Brigade stationed at South Shields. On April 16th Phil was part of fire service crew attending a fire in a two storey dwelling, in Jarrow, Tyne & Wear to attempt the rescue of a woman and her teenage son.

Arriving as the second appliance Phil & another fireman gained access to the bedroom where they were caught in a flashover that caused 3rd degree burns to their hands and arms. On admittance to hospital they required that their tunics were cut from them and admitted to an intensive care ward. The diagnosis was that they would need to be moved to a specialist burns unit for skin grafts once fit. Later that Sunday morning a minister from the Elim Pentecostal Church in the town was on his way to the church when he heard the news and was prompted to come to the hospital and ask if he could pray for the two injured firemen. Interestingly both were backslidden Christians.

The minister was allowed one minute to pray and left without the firemen realising he had visited and prayed. At the next medical assessment later that day the Doctors were amazed to discover that new skin and tissue was already beginning to grow where the burns were most serious. The improvement was so rapid that five days later both were discharged without skin grafts. Today neither of them has any scars or marks to show the severity of what they went through.

This whole incident had a marked affect on Phil and several weeks later along with two Fire Service colleagues he returned to the minister’s church at an evening meeting to say thank you. At that meeting he felt the conviction of Holy Spirit and responded to the altar call in front of his work colleagues much to everyone’s surprise including his own!

Brief History
St Albans Elim Pentecostal Church was a church plant from Watford Elim in 1976 under the leadership of Ian Meredith. In 1985 David Campbell moved from Ashborne Elim (Derbyshire) to St Albans to take over from Ian and became Senior Pastor, and the church was renamed City Church St Albans. In 1991 St Albans Community Church (also known as Maple Church) merged with City Church to form a new church still under the name of City Church and part of Elim.

In 1993 an evangelical church at The Wades in Hatfield merged with City Church St Albans and became the Hatfield wing of City Church. It was renamed City Church Hatfield, and came under the leadership of David Campbell. Since then a number of leaders encouraged the church to grow until 2001 when Mike & Heather Dyce took over its leadership.

In 2004 City Church Hatfield became a fully independent Elim church.

For 26 years City Church St Albans had been meeting in rented halls, but in 2003 it obtained planning permission to buy a large industrial unit and convert it into a place of worship with offices and facilities for youth and children. This is now the main venue of City Church St Albans. The unit was called Unity Works by it's previous owner, and the name has been carried forward by City Church to become a prophetic statement of how the church leaders in St Albans are meeting and praying together.

In August 2005 Phil & Elaine Johnston joined the City Church leadership team becoming Senior Pastors in February 2006. Dave & Mandy Campbell are still associated with City Church as 'Pastor Emeritas'. Dave is one of four national leaders with the Elim Pentecostal Churches having responsibility for the Metropolitan West and Metropolitan East Regions of London and South East. Mandy is Chairman of Lifelink a national ministry that seeks to empower and envision ladies of all ages in to all things missions.
