ERSA Employability Day

Our Essex based Employment service recently took part in ERSA’s (Employment Related Service Association) annual Employability Day. The day is an opportunity for employment support organisations and employers to celebrate and showcase the work they undertake supporting people into the workplace. We jumped at the chance to take part in this year's chosen theme, ‘Closing the Gaps'.

Over the course of the week, we provided three accessible recruitment sessions headed up by Suzanne Thomson, one of our Job Brokers and her amazing team of Disability Ambassadors, people with lived experience of a learning disability who lead on our employment events across London.

The sessions gave employers from a variety of backgrounds, including the NHS and Department of Work and Pensions, a chance to sit down with people we support in Essex (our fantastic Experts By Experience) and review current employment materials and discuss how to break them down.

Each session were user led and gave the chance for people we support to be honest about the challenges they face when trying to understand recruitment materials. For some, the use of different fonts led to confusion about where to begin when reading a document, for another, information is hard to take in when there’s too much going on, adding that, ‘having spaces in documents allows me to take a breath’.

Employers left the day with notebooks full of recommendations as to how to make their material more accessible.
