Home Groups at City Church
The Heart of Home groups

Homegroups are small groups of people, usually between 8 and 12, who care for and encourage each other throughout the week and help to build deeper relationships with our friends, neighbours and colleagues. The groups will usually meet once a week in a home or location convenient to the group. Most will meet on a weekday evening but some may come together either during the day or on Saturday Central to homegroups is the desire to see Christians develop their relationship with God, learning how to love others and make an impact on those around them at work, school or college and in their neighbourhood. Homegroups provide an opportunity for caring for individual members and building relationships with others that would not be possible using just the weekly church services. Homegroups are less formal than Sunday meetings and provide a more relaxed atmosphere and give everyone the opportunity to participate.

We believe that every Christian has the potential to be used to minister God’s gifts to others. For instance this may be through hospitality, teaching, encouraging or by using the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The home group is a wonderful opportunity to develop these gifts in a smaller environment. Group meetings vary in their content but may include an ice-breaker activity, a time of worship, some teaching, and a time to share concerns and pray with one another or about issues Homegroups can also become involved in projects within the church or local community. For instance a homegroup may volunteer to provide tea and coffee after church one Sunday or hold a fundraising activity for a charity or church organisation. They may also get involved in reaching out directly to those outside the church, for example filling Christmas boxes for orphans in Romania or providing lunch for the workers in one of the local offices.

Homegroups are also places to encourage one another to be witnesses to people who are not yet Christians. This may be by praying for our friends to come to know Jesus, by encouraging one another as we develop our friendships with others or through an event that encourages people to hear the Gospel. Homegroups give many opportunities to get to know others in the church much better, to help develop their Christian ministry and to reach out and help others not in the church to get to know Jesus.

At the heart of the homegroup are three elements based on key commands of Jesus that form the vision of our homegroups

Our vision is that every person regularly attending City Church should be in a Home-Group, meeting together during the week and coming together with the remainder of the church in our weekly celebrations. Both are as important as each other. If you are interested in joining a home-group or would just like a bit more information, please let us know by sending an email to elaine.johnston@city-church-st-albans.com
